How To Get Started With Online Dating

Online Dating is extremely popular - with hundreds of thousands of people meeting online every week. However, if you would like to join this way of meeting people, there are several things that you should always bear in mind, because as with other aspects in life, you will find you will have much more success if you follow the simple rules of the game and treat people with respect. You may not realize the rules, but it will make all the difference as to whether you find your perfect date or continue to remain single.

When you have decided which Online Dating service to use - and there are many - you must ensure you read the profiles as well as just looking at the pictures, however attractive those pictures may seem. Some profiles are just pictures. I would say to stay clear of these because if you decide to contact that person, you want to be able to say more than just “You look nice” and, as the old saying goes, looks are not everything. You need something that you can talk about and reading the profile is a way of finding something.

Read through the profile carefully. Ensure you always look at a person’s “My Perfect Date” section of your Online Dating service to see what he or she is going to be interested in. Likewise, you can see if that person is going to be of interest to you. It’s no good if you are, say 33, and the person is looking for someone to date in the age range of 20-30. You or they may have preferences about children. Smoking is another as is religion. There are lots of things they may be interested in that don’t relate to you. Or vice versa.

This is one reason why the conventional Online Dating sites are losing popularity and the “niche” Online Dating sites are gaining in popularity. I have read that there is a “Farmers Only Online Dating Site”. This is for “farm-minded people” who are looking for similar “farm-minded people”. Eco Dating is another example - for eco and conservation minded people. There are niche dating sites for almost everything - you just need to find them. Or, if not, start your own niche dating site.

It can be annoying to receive an email which just says “You look nice. Send me an email if you want to talk.” Or emails which are asking general questions like “How are you?” You wouldn’t like to receive an email like that, so don’t send them to others. Be more specific with questions like “I see in your profile you like dogs. Do you have any and if so, what breed are they?”. You could then go on to telling him or her that you also like dogs. On the other hand, if you don’t like dogs and you read someones profile where it says they like dogs, you could pass that profile by and move on to the next one. Only by reading the profiles can you find yours - and their - specifics. Following the above example shows the recipient your personal interests too.

When you have found a profile that you like on your Online Dating service, by all means send them an initial email. If that person shows no interest, then move on. This is important. You have a choice of millions. Sometimes, people will not answer your email on purpose - it’s not because they haven’t received it - it’s just that not answering seems an acceptable thing to do these days. It is a little like going for a job interview. If you get the position, you receive a letter telling you that you were successful and when to start, but with some companies if you don’t get the position you receive nothing. I find it rude, but that’s the way it is.

Taking note of the above, do not repeatedly send emails asking if they received your last. They did but they are just ignoring you or are simply not interested. If the person does write you back and tells you that they are simply not interested or there is no chemistry, then just let it be. To write back and tell them that they are rude, mean or some other unpleasantry is not going to help and will no doubt be against your Online Dating Services’ Rules. Use your common sense and do not say or do anything that you wouldn’t normally do or say face to face.

Online Dating can be fun for everyone if you follow the etiquette. Above all, be responsible, be wise and be careful.
